The Net is Finally Lighting Up for Steve Young for Congress!

Daily Kos has a great diary up about Steve Young's election in the 48th CD (Orange County, California). Lots of people are reading and responding. This is what we've been wishing and waiting for, here in OC! Thanks, Kossacks and all other netizens. Now, if the DCCC would only send out a blast, as it did for the CA-50 (we finally got a blast from CaDems the other day!) life would be complete.

One thing that people here realize, and that will have to become our mantra, is that congressional races are NOT local any more. We all have to work together to recreate Congress, and that will mean working for races all over the country, no matter where we happen to live.

In terms of the Primary numbers, you can see that if Dems had been willing to stick together for this open primary (i.e., the vanity candidates had realized they shouldn't run, and other prominent Dems had understood that (1) Marilyn Brewer couldn't win even with their help, and (2) even though she is pro-choice, she would still support Bush's policies, so what was the point), Steve most likely would have come in second in the primary. That would have put a whole different spin on this race. Over and over, I heard people say, "oh, but I'm going to vote for him in the General Election -- the primary doesn't really matter" but it did matter, because all the papers AND the DNC, DCCC, etc., wrote him off.

Open primaries in California are going to have to mean that we approach politics in a whole different way. This should be our lesson.

But that was then, this is now, and Thursday night the headquarters was hopping! Let's hope for a big crowd out this weekend, and lots of phone bankers (and donations) from all over the country. Go to http://www.steveyoungforcongress and call the number. They'll hook you up to virtual phonebanking, or, if you're in driving distance, precinct walking. And of course, donations through Act Blue are VERY welcome! Thanks again.

Fantastic news Sharon! (none / 0)

I'm going to finish up my Santa Ana precinct tomorrow morning or early afternoon and stop by Steve's office for a new task. Thanks for the update.

Open Primary (none / 0)

This was a special case, right?  Am I mistaken- I thought California doesn't use open or blanket primaries anymore?

And what's the rethinking you are proposing?  Using grassroots and popular mojo to force the party into a single candidate before the primary.  Seems misguided to me.

Re: Open Primary (none / 0)

Their is another Initiative for Open Primaries  on the next General Ballot. Given that we tried them then rejected them...I doubt it will pass. Gives the party with the most money an unholy edge.  The Party should fight it with fervor. Witness the Open Primary result of CA-48. Campbell nearly took it.

McCain and Gov Muscles support it if that tells you anything.

Hasn't passed or even gathered enough signatures I don't think....just proposed and in the process.
